Project Announcement – Electro-chlorination Module

WestWater have successfully won a tender with the Water Corporation for the design and construction of an Electro-chlorination facility for the new Cocos (Keeling) West Island Desalination Plant.

The Department of Defence (DoD) and its contractors are building a Temporary Desalination Plant on West Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This new water source will require chlorine disinfection and the Water Corporation will supply this module to the DoD.

Two Hyprolyser iSEC 90 Electro-chlorinators will be housed within a 6m x 3m transportable building, and will have capacity to produce 4.4kg/day of chlorine solution. The following equipment will also be installed as part of this new Electro-chlorination package: 300kg brine tank; air blower; water softener; water chillers; two 600L chemical storage tanks; hydrogen leak detection system; Grundfos DDA dose pumps; chlorine analyser; sample return system; safety shower & eyewash; and ancillary instrumentation for local and remote monitoring.

The Electro-chlorinators generate a sodium hypochlorite solution which will be dosed into the water main as method of primary disinfection. The electrolyser will operate as a batch system, using filtered, softened water and salt to create a brine solution. As the solution passes through the electrolytic cells, a low voltage will be applied to produce a dilute sodium hypochlorite.

All aspects of the design will be completed in accordance with Water Corporation design standards and Australian Standards.

The project is expected to reach Practical Completion by July 2026.
