Project Announcement – Standard ACWS Disinfection Modules

WestWater have successfully won a tender with the Water Corporation to develop new standard designs for containerised gas chlorination and electro-chlorination facilities for remote communities.

The Water Corporation has taken over the management of approximately 140 Aboriginal Community Water Supplies (ACWS). It is seeking to upgrade the water supply disinfection systems in these communities over time.

The Water Corporation has a standardised modular gas chlorination system design for water supply disinfection that it has developed over the past 25 years. However, this design is not necessarily cost-effective nor entirely fit-for-purpose in small remote ACWS applications.

The new ACWS Chlorination Modules will be self-contained transportable chlorination systems that are constructed and tested off site and then installed and commissioned on site, very similar to the Water Corporation’s current ‘ADWG Chlorination Modules’. They will contain a chlorination source and dosing system, a free chlorine residual sampling system, and associated ancillaries. They will dose chlorine on the inlet to a chlorinated water storage tank. They will also include a tank recirculation loop to allow ‘top-up’ chlorination.

They may be based on one of three technologies: gas chlorination, batch/brine electro-chlorination (BEC), or continuous electro-chlorination (CEC).

All aspects of the design will be completed in accordance with Water Corporation design standards and Australian Standards.

The project is expected to reach Practical Completion by May 2026.
