Challenge the client faced:
Rio Tinto Iron Ore (Pilbara Iron) were dosing 12.5% Sodium Hypochlorite into the water supply at the West Angeles mine site in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia.
The 2ML water storage tank on site supplies both potable water and fire water to the West Angeles mine site.
Dosing 12.5% Sodium Hypochlorite meant that RTIO operators were faced with chemical handling risks on a regular basis. In addition to this, there was also a need to increase capacity of the existing water treatment plant on site.
Solution provided:
RTIO engaged WestWater (part of Centurion Group) to install a new Electro-chlorination batching and dosing system in place of the old Sodium Hypochlorite dosing system.
The new Electro-chlorination system also features new Recirculation pumps, and WestWater have modified the existing Recirculation pipework on site to improve turnover of the water supply within the 2ML storage tank.
Conclusion / project outcome:
The new 40ft Electro-chlorination module houses 2 x iSEC 500 Hyprolysers, 2000L bunded chemical storage tank, hydrogen leak detection system, dosing and recirculation pumps, chlorine analyser package, and all associated instruments and valving.
Hyprolyser iSEC Electro-chlorinators utilise brine and DC current to generate 0.6% Sodium Hypochlorite on site.
The new Electro-chlorination batching & dosing system has the capacity to produce 12kg/day of 100% chlorine solution.
