Challenge the client faced:
The South Coast WTP, located in Albany, Western Australia, is supplied with raw water from two local bore mains. Potable water is then produced by dosing the raw water with Chlorine, Fluoride, and Calgon.
The Fluorosilicic Acid (FSA) Dosing Plant was 20 years old, and had been found to no longer meet current Water Corporation Design Standards or Australian Standards, and had some safety issues associated with it.
There were concerns that the old FSA tank may fail due to its age, and some additional work would be required to make the plant safer to operate and provide greater redundancy.
Solution provided:
WestWater have completed the following upgrades to the FSA Dosing Plant:
- Installation of a new 17kL HDPE FSA Tank, complete with dual tank level indication
- Installation of new Grundfos DDA dosing pumps
- Conversion to new duty/standby dosing panels
- Replacement of existing chemical pipework and valving
- Installation of new chemical barrier protection
Conclusion / project outcome:
The upgrades completed by WestWater have brought the FSA Dosing Plant in line with:
Water Corporation Design Standards:
- DS71 – Fluorosilicic Acid (FSA),
- DS79 – Design of Chemical Systems,
and Australian Standard:
- AS3780 – The Storage and Handling of Corrosive Substances.
These upgrades have been undertaken to ensure the plant is made safer for Water Corporation personnel to operate and maintain, and to ensure the water supply to the local residents meets water quality and Department of Health requirements.
