WestWater have successfully won a tender with the Water Corporation for the design, construction and installation of a dedicated filter backwash pump station at the Camballin Water Treatment Plant, located in the West Kimberley area of Western Australia.
The Camballin WTP is fed by 2 bores. The plant chlorinates the water and uses mono-media pressure filtration to remove oxidized iron and manganese. Water is stored in Camballin Ground Tank which is then pumped into the reticulation. Currently, the plant filtration system has no dedicated backwash system. Operators are forced to use the bores (unchlorinated raw water) to backwash the filter. One of the bores has water quality and casing issues and will no longer be available within the next few years. This is a problem as the backwash requires both bores to run to achieve adequate pressure and flow.
Water Corporation requires a dedicated backwash system which will pump water from the Camballin ground tank through the filter. This will remove the reliance on the 2 bores for backwashing. The backwash pumps will be variable speed to achieve a desired backwash flowrate. A new flowmeter will be installed to monitor and control the backwash flow rate.
All aspects of the works will be completed in accordance with the Contract, Water Corporation Standards and Australian Standards.
The project is expected to reach Practical Completion by August 2023.
